STORIES OF MISSION ZERO – NEOM – THE LINE

The NEOM mega-project –
Valves for the world’s largest electrolysis plant
in Saudi Arabia

The world’s largest plant for the production of green hydrogen is currently being built in Neom, and will start to operate in 2026 with a capacity of two gigawatts. NEOM is not just a major international project – it is an integral part of a spectacular vision for the future. Siekmann Econosto will be supplying the valves for what will be the world’s largest electrolyser for the production of hydrogen.

The Neom region in Saudi Arabia provides the setting for the NEOM megacity, a model of sustainable living that combines green energy and everyday life across a 170-kilometre stretch from the Red Sea to the mountains; an area that was previously desert. Innovative projects incorporating technology, environmental protection and a sustainable lifestyle are becoming a reality here. In order to realise the city of the future with connections to the latest technologies and to help make Saudi Arabia’s economy independent of oil, major international companies are supplying the ongoing construction of the hydrogen plant with their special products.

10,000 SE special valves

The future hydrogen plant, which is being built on the city’s outskirts, will make the Neom site a global hub for green hydrogen energy. On behalf of a well-known American company from the raw materials and gas sector, over 100 modules are being supplied for an alkaline water electrolysis plant, for the development and construction of which a well-known German industrial company has assumed responsibility. On behalf of this renowned German company, Siekmann Econosto is supplying around 10,000 special valves for the production of hydrogen. This enormous number of valves from global production will be called up by the customer for installation in the electrolysis modules in over 20 inspection and delivery lots during the period November 2022 to July 2024.

We make the energy transition affordable

SE was already on the shortlist at an early stage, not only because of the experience gained from over 1,300 realised projects worldwide, but also due to the fact that Siekmann was already a trusted supplier, having provided valves for hydrogen plants for over 20 years. Outstanding product expertise, technological know-how and comprehensive project experience in the supply of valves for complex industrial plants were decisive factors that led in the award of the contract. Siekmann has always shown itself to be a highly efficient and exceptionally reliable partner, especially when it comes to large-scale projects involving investments worth billions, and thereby exceeding the expectations of its customers. The company’s pioneering projects have served as references and have been instrumental in the awarding of further projects.

Siekmann Econosto will deliver the first shipment of valves to Neom in November 2022. This major order includes shut-off valves, ball valves and butterfly valves in accordance with the ASME standard. With over 65 years of experience in the international valve market, SE has a reputation as a reliable partner, because Siekmann valves have proven themselves in the hydrogen industry segment over the decades. An ideal basis for innovative large-scale projects that require future-oriented and long-term functionality.

As soon as the alkaline water electrolysis plant has been successfully completed, the project partners will operate the plant together. The resulting hydrogen will be synthesised into climate-neutral ammonia and exported to all corners of the globe. Siekmann Econosto is expected to deliver its final shipment of valves in July 2024.
